Environmental protection at City – we face the responsibility
Sustainability
For a world without plastic
It’s time to rethink. When we realised that we were using almost 1 million conventional plastic bags a year, we knew that we had to act. As early as 2016, we began to eliminate the use of black refuse sacks wherever possible, replacing them with multi-purpose bags made of cotton blends. The bags are emptied at our disposal station, then washed and reused.
But we are doing even more: since the beginning of the year we have been using organic waste bags made from field crops such as potatoes, corn or sugar beet. The starch contained in these bags is fermented with the help of bacteria to lactic acid or alcohol and then chemically processed into organic plastic. The products are certified according to the European standard DIN EN 13432 and comply with the current BioAbfW (organic waste ordinance).
Our major goal, however, is to reduce the number of plastic waste bags from 650,000 to approx. 150,000 by 2020 as part of our active environmental protection activities with our customers.
What we are already doing
- No black garbage bags
- Reduction of plastic waste bags by 650,000 pieces
- Use of reusable multi-purpose bags
- Use of organic waste bags made of arable crops,
such as Potatoes or sugar beet
